Google Earth

Thank you to the wonderful Mr. Power for starting our Migration Unit this week by exploring Google Earth with the students.

If you do not have Google Earth on your computer it is a fast and free download. I encourage you to watch this with your children and ask them about what they have  been discussing in class. I think a great idea once you have Google Earth up on your screen is to go to Tools, Options, Touring, and adjust the ‘tool pause’ bar to about 20-30 seconds. That way you should have enough time to read what the children have written as you fly around the world seeing where they are from.

Soccer Day

Thanks 5KP for the most successful soccer day I have experienced in four years at S.A.S.

Not only was the weather perfect but also everyone was here, everyone was well and you all exhibited improved skills and excellent team spirit.

Congratulations 5KP

I have a Californian Teaching Assistant!!!

I just want to send out a big thank you to my friend of 13 years, Harriet. She is always me sending me great stuff I can use with the students like in the following posts. I think you will agree that this next site is also great fun to watch, you may need flash, to see how an International Space Station is made over a ten-year period.

Thanks Harriet and keep those great learning-tools coming.

This is Harriet with her daughter Erin and her husband Stan.

May is here…

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend wherever you were. My family had a wonderful time down in Guilin and Yangshuo and highly recommend going there if you have not already.

I have added a link to my useful sites on my blogroll that you might like to check out as your child gets closer to becoming a 6th grader, it is the site for the 6th grade team.

News of the Moment in 5KP

Hello and thanks to the Parents who joined us last Thursday at Puxi for the Spring Fling. Please thank Mr. Hossack if you see him as it was he who organized this day for us. We were lucky the weather smiled on us and despite some bus issues and the long commute, the children had a wonderful day.

As I reminded the students this morning when we spent the period writing down important dates in our diary, time is short, with less than 7 actual weeks until the end of the school year. Keep your eyes on Parent Talk, my blog, and e mails from school as there is a great deal coming up before our summer vacation can begin. This week we have no school Friday and a math test on Wedndesday. All students should be bringing home Study Links and Student Reference Books to help them revise material and concepts that we have covered during the unit.

Skills covered on the unit ten test include:

*solve two-step pan-balance problems

*write algebraic expressions to represent situations

*represent rate problems as formulas, tables and graphs

*use formulas to find circumference and area of a circle

*distinguish between circumference and area of a circle

*solve one-step pan-balance problems

*interpret mystery line plots and graphs

See this sheet Ms Canar developed to aid you with your revision. The second page of the sheet on Assessment Description gives you a clear indication of what sort of questions will be on the test and how to revise for them using your SRB (Student Reference Book).

N.B. If you cannot access Ms Canar’s sheet, I have copied the information into this post below.

I gave the students two sheets to take home today. One is for a book report (due May 21st) and the other is for the Healthy Meal Project (due May 27th).  This second project is a real favorite for the 5th grade. I have set it well in advance so that they have four weekends between now and when it is due, please go over the sheet with them as soon as you can so that you can make a plan together that won’t have anyone in the family stressed out. The students have been learning about what makes up a healthy and nutritious meal in class time and they will continue to do this over the next couple of weeks, they will also start and finish the puberty unit next week so stay tuned for some possible questions or re-telling of what they have learned.

Lessons for the day

During the morning please go to this site where you will explore Arianna’s Nutrition Expedition.

Work with a partner to make your way around the website, including the information on the home page

Your task for the morning is to spend the time exploring the home page site, especially the Arianna activities. If you cannot find enough to maintain your interest here you are to start your own planning for your healthy meal project by researching the sort of things you would like to cook.I would rather you did not start this however, as I would like you to explore the site thoroughly and if possible try and finish the online tour and some of the interactive nutrition games and activities through to activity number 8. Do your best to explore today so that we can go through the site together tomorrow afternoon.

In Math you will work on lesson 10.8.If you finish the lesson, including the math boxes, ask your teacher to read to you from our favorite adventure book…use your manners!

Last period today should be spent completing an A4 sized colour sheet of your Haiku’s complete with 3 Haiku’s, a border, heading, your name and illustrations for each poster.See you tomorrow, be good!
