Reporting on the Classics

This week the class is working on their second book report which will be presented to their classmates over a few lessons of Language Arts starting on Monday the 8th of December. This is not supposed to be an extensive and detailed project. I was really impressed with the effort the students put into their first report two weeks ago and already many students have read one of the books that their classmate recommended to them. Great stuff 5KP.

Due to the interest expressed by the class in studying Classics, that is what we are focusing on now in reading. Thanks to Jackie for sharing 11 of her Classic Stories with us. I am sure many parents recall hours of joy reading such stories as Treasure Island, Moby Dick and Heidi.

This time no storyboard is required for the oral presentation. Instead you are to complete an A4/A3 sized-poster for the class advertising your book to us, this poster will be used as a visual aid during your presentation. Your aim is to ‘sell’ the book to us by giving us an attractive poster and informative speech that highlights the best parts of the book.

When you do your speech, it is along the same lines as what is on the poster, your poster should complement your oral presentation in the same way your storyboard complemented your recent speech.

Questions you should be answering in your speech and/or poster…

Who is the author?

What else have they written?

What year was this book written?

What makes it a classic, why do you think people are still reading it today?

What were the highlights of the book for you?

Pick a sad/funny/happy/scary/exciting/tragic/dangerous scene and read it aloud to the class.

News of the Moment

Here is an invitation to attend our Global Natives Open House.

Invitation

The Giving Tree bags are due to be handed in this Friday December 5th, ignore all other dates, sorry for any confusion.

Our Unit 5 Math test is next Monday the 8th of December.

Unit 5

Skills covered on the unit five test include:

*add fractions with like denominators

*order and compare fractions

*convert between fractions and percents

*draw a circle graph for a set of data

*measure pieces of a circle graph; interpret a circle graph

*convert between fractions and mixed numbers

*find equivalent fractions

Students are busy working on their Global Native Project in class. They are expected to be following the calendar we have set up in class that is on the wiki and this blog. Every couple of nights they should be spending about 20-30 mins on either the wiki, artifact or speech.

Closet Clean Out

Many of the children have been very generous when it comes to donating for the Giving Tree and I have also had a lot of people asking what to do with second hand items. So while you are feeling in a giving and thankful mood this weekend perhaps take some time to clear out some of the things that have been hanging around in your closet unused for awhile. You may have noticed my unclutterer.com link down the side of my page, they have some great tips for being ruthless when it comes to a wardrobe make-over. When you are umming and ahhing over whether you really need that 4th jacket, remember the children and parents who don’t have the luxury or making that choice and give generously.

Coming up in December is a clothing drive to benefit Li Min school for migrant workers’ children.  We pass the school each day as we drive through the village.  Boxes will be set up at each of the main entrances from December 8-12.  The principal at Li Min says that many of their students are from the earthquake hit region and that adult clothing would also be useful and appreciated.  This is a great opportunity to clear out your closets!  Thanks for your support.

Goals Revisited

In class I have talked about goal setting with the students. Here are some quick questions I found on one of my favorite blogs unclutterer.com to scan over at the end of any given day; of course, some days are better than others. Write in your writer’s workshop notebook or on a blog post in response to the following questions. If you do this a few times over a few weeks you may start to see some patterns emerge and you can start to modify your behavior to improve the quality of your experiences.

  1. What processes went well today?
  2. Why did those processes succeed?
  3. What processes didn’t go well today?
  4. Why did those processes not succeed?
  5. What changes can I make in the future to turn these non-successful processes into successful processes?

Giving Tree Date has been extended

Our Giving Tree bags are filling up beautifully, thank you parents for the time and money you have spent shopping for these children. I am also filling bags for my second graders class so I am aware it is not always convenient to shop however knowing how much joy and warmth you can bring to a child makes it all worthwhile and makes me reflect on how lucky I am and how much I take for granted.

Homework Reminder

H.O.M.E.W.O.R.K.

There is more to homework than just doing the homework at home.Remember this 5 step process so that you can get the best out of your homework experience.

Step one…

LISTEN WHEN HOMEWORK IS BEING DISCUSSED

Step two…

WRITE DOWN THE HOMEWORK INSTRUCTIONS THAT ARE ON THE BOARD

Step three…

TAKE ALL OF THE REQUIRED HOMEWORK MATERIALS HOME

Step four…

COMPLETE THE HOMEWORK IN A QUIET SPACE IN YOUR HOME

Step five…

BRING ALL OF THE FINISHED HOMEWORK BACK AND HAND IT IN ON TIME

Establishing a regular time and place to complete your homework is a great way to start creating patterns that will help you all through your educational career.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Willow, Keaton, Kieran, Tiffany and Jackie who all came up with some names for the new planet discovered outside our solar system. This was a homework task that was on my blog to be completed by Tuesday.

So for the rest of you, another chance for success…which one of the following do you like the best.

Pegasus
