Happy Friday 5KP

The class certainly love science and we had a great double lesson today learning how to separate dry mixtures.
We are underway with our second math unit for the year, Estimation and Computation. We have reviewed our tests for unit one and discussed the errors that were made; the children should have brought home their tests for you to look at by now.

Have a great weekend everybody and thanks so much to the parents who came out last night to our open house, I really enjoyed talking with you. I will leave you with some photos of 5KP with their KLH Reading Buddies. Thanks to Mrs Howitt for allowing us this special time with her class every day 1.

Science Fun has finally begun…

I know the class were delighted today to begin our science classes with the Mixtures and Solutions unit from our Foss Kits. The class eagerly grouped up in their designated groups to begin experimenting on how to make and separate a solution.

In other news…Remember Monday is a Day 4 so students will have library check out and PE on this day…two things to remember as they pack their bags for school that day…

School Photos will be September 7th, 8th and 9th…more details to follow.

There is a PTSA meeting on Thursday September 3rd at 10 am so see the PTSA blog for details on that. That day will also be treat day where students can buy a special treat with 5rmb at the cafeteria, this is being run by middle school this time but Grade 5 will also be responsible for making treats on the 14th of January and the 4th of May…don’t panic, I will be sure to remind you again before that day.

Here are the details of our upcoming open house Open House Information for Parents

I look forward to seeing all of you there.

Have a great weekend.

One more sleep…

Not long now, only a matter of hours in fact until 5KP come together for the first time.

I have met four of our new students this morning and I look forward to the contribution they will bring to Shanghai American School. Take some time to see the list of your fellow class mates and to look at your schedule.

Note that lunch and recess times will have changed between 4th and 5th grade and that this year all of the Elementary School will be operating on a 6 day schedule.

Readers Workshop Oral Presentation

By now you should have all decided on a ‘Just Right’ book to do your class talk on.

You are to present a 4-5 minute speech on Monday the 24th during our LA block.

The speech needs to include the following:

Summary of the book

Details of the main characters

Storyboard of the Plot as a visual aid to your talk with between 8-12 scenes

Rating of the book and why you liked it and who you would recommend it to

Remember the aim of the exercise is to introduce your classmates to new books

If you were the teacher for a week…

Hi 5KP, I have enjoyed getting to know you over the first week of school this year. I feel like we have made a good solid start to the year and have gotten to know each other a little better. We have established some guidelines for behavioral expectations in the classroom and discussed what we like and dislike about school.

Your task now is to have a think about what YOU would do if you had been the teacher for this first week of school.

How would you have done things differently?

Would you have done some things the same way? What and why or why not?

How would you make new students feel welcome in our school?

What sort of ‘getting to know you’ activities would you have led?

What sort of homework would you have set?

After you have had a think about the above questions, go to the ‘comment’ section of this post, it is linked below in blue. Write down your answers to the questions in as much detail as you can, they should be in paragraph form. Over the weekend, check back on this post and see what your classmates have said in their comments. Try and have a discussion about what they have said by adding more comments to the post in reply to what your friends have said. Make sure you use their name in your comment if you are responding to something they have said.
Mr Howitt’s class have already done a similar activity so check out his blog by clicking on the link at the start of this sentence and you may have a better idea about what I mean.

I look forward to seeing your comments adding up to some interesting and thoughtful discussion. Remember, the whole world can see what you are writing so make sure you make a good impression the first time around and maintain a responsible attitude when you are posting.

Writers Workshop

We have happily started our Writers Workshop unit in our Language Arts classes this week. During the first quarter we will be using a variety of tools and stimuli to start creating a folio of ideas that we will draw on throughout the year. The idea is for the children to understand that they are all writers and they have many memories that they can write about. Then we will help them to go to a deeper level in their writing to extract more meaning and value from their work.

Go to our class flickr page to check out some of your children in the writing zone digging down deep to remember some of the special experiences they can draw from in their writing. We really have a great class of writers in 5KP, it is very exciting.

Izzy deep in thought…
