So far so good…

Well, we still have Emma Li to meet but so far so good with the 10 girls and 9 boys who have made their way to the classroom of 5KP.

We are getting to know each other and learning how to function as a team in room 209. Every teacher does things differently so I am taking time with the class to show them how their room is set up; we are establishing rules and guidelines together at the same time as getting to know each other a little more through games and casual conversation.

Thank you for entrusting me with your child for the next 10 months, I know we will have an enriching and rewarding time together.

One more sleep…

Not long now, only a matter of hours in fact until 5KP come together for the first time.

I have met four of our new students this morning and I look forward to the contribution they will bring to Shanghai American School. Take some time to see the list of your fellow class mates and to look at your schedule.

Note that lunch and recess times will have changed between 4th and 5th grade and that this year all of the Elementary School will be operating on a 6 day schedule.

Welcome to 5th Grade 5KP

“The beginning is the most important part of the work.”

As I sit in the 5th grade project area, I cannot believe that the summer of 2009 has come and gone so quickly.

I am nervous and excited to meet the students who will become 5KP and I look forward to getting to know you and your families once you return on the 18th of August. Please enjoy the last week of your vacation and make sure you are well rested and refreshed for your return.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Students, after you have put your kidspiration map onto your blog, the next step is to choose a book out of the basket Mr Power has brought in.

Read through a few books and find one that resonates with you. See Braedon’s blog from Ms Canar’s class for an example. You are to write out a couple of paragraph’s summing up the plot of the story and then relating it back to the UDHR that you have been studying. Note Braedon’s use of the words discrimination, equal, liberty, freedom, asylum.

Post to your blog and include a novel cover of your book.

Field Day now seems so long ago…

But here are some photos for you anyway.

It is nearly time for us to wrap up the school year, poetry booklets have been submitted as have book reports and healthy meal projects; always a highlight for me, thank you for support on this one.

In class now we are finishing off our migration unit with Mr. Power as well as reviewing the year in math. We are also completing some work on our blogs and doing plenty of reading and preparing for Middle School.

Thanks for a wonderful year and I look forward to seeing you either on Friday for our Celebration of Learning and Summer Sizzler and/or Tuesday for our Moving Up Celebration, an invitation is coming home with your child today.

Opportunities for Leadership in the Middle School

Here is an opportunity for students who wish to be more involved in a leadership role in the Middle School next year.

All students are welcome to apply and should turn their forms into their classroom teacher. Then next Wednesday I will stop by to pick them up.

The Eagle Ambassador elective runs for a semester, whilst other electives run for a quarter. If students are not successful for semester one, they are still eligible to apply for semester 2.

Field Day

Dear Parents,

This Friday May 22nd from 9-2:45 will be field day for children in grades 3-5. Please send your child to school on Friday wearing sneakers (part of the field day is a track meet), comfortable pants or shorts and their house shirt. You may also want to send along some sun screen, a hat, a water bottle and an extra set of clothes to change into in case they get too wet (some of the fun stations are water related). Currently the weather forecast for Friday is sunny and clear with a high of 32 degrees C. Let’s hope that is an accurate forecast and it doesn’t rain!

Thank you,

Ronna Zigmand

Google Earth

Thank you to the wonderful Mr. Power for starting our Migration Unit this week by exploring Google Earth with the students.

If you do not have Google Earth on your computer it is a fast and free download. I encourage you to watch this with your children and ask them about what they have  been discussing in class. I think a great idea once you have Google Earth up on your screen is to go to Tools, Options, Touring, and adjust the ‘tool pause’ bar to about 20-30 seconds. That way you should have enough time to read what the children have written as you fly around the world seeing where they are from.
