Finally…

…I’m back!

It was less than a week ago that our family flew back into Shanghai after an action packed three week trip to Australia. After a whirl-wind week of getting back into the swing of things; I feel a little more ready for a blog post! I do hope you all had a restful/exciting/rejuvenating holiday with your loved ones and that 2011 is a healthy and happy year for your family.

A very warm welcome goes out to Vanessa, our wonderful new student who has settled in beautifully to complete our class this week and take it to the very even number of 20; 10 girls and 10 boys!

Now students, what you’ve been waiting for… News on our Book in a ? Project.

Title: Book in a (you decide depending on the theme of your book and what it is best suited for as well as where your skills lie; you could present in the form of a podcast, keynote, poster, A4 packet or present your work on a cereal box, shoe or flower…)
Due: The first 5 presentations will be on Monday January 24th, which another 5 for each day ’til Thursday and any make-ups needed on the Friday before Chinese New Year vacation. (Due dates are according to your reader’s notebook dates.)
Goal: To share with the class information about a book you have started and finished in 2011 and have some fun as you prepare to share.
Requirements: Your presentation must include approximately 200 words on each of the following areas:

*Characters
*Plot
*Recommendations

We will clarify the above aspects of a book report again during class time but we will not have time to work on the project during class.

Students are expected to present their work to the class during their allotted time and orally tell us a few things about the book; I don’t expect them to read their report out loud, rather just to tell us why they liked the book (or didn’t) and answer any questions people might have about the book as well as go through the slides/poster/report with us.

Students, be creative, have fun and manage your time well this week. You have at least 7 days from now to work on this and I know some of you started work as early as Wednesday. PLAN how you will get your task completed and don’t leave it until the last minute!

In other news…
Before the Chinese New Year Holiday we will complete our Nutrition Unit in Health, our Unit 6 Math test (and consequently our first math journal) and our Essay Unit which I am loving working on with the kids. We have a busy and brief time to do this and I am flexible in that if some things seem beyond us; we will use the three school days after school resumes on February 9th, but the point is, even though there is a short amount of time between Winter Vacation and Chinese New Year; we will be making the most of it.

Parents (AND STUDENTS) please bake for our 5th grade treat day this Thursday Jan 20th!

Speaking of treats, we will be discussing this article in class during our nutrition lessons this week students. It would be very mature of you, very scholarly and very intelligent of you to read it first, see if you understand it, and have an opinion on it or questions about it before coming to class. I will give you until Thursday (which just happens to also be treat day), let’s see how ready for middle school you really are with your independent learning. In accordance with the complexity of the article, I will be rewarding some of the best questions/understandings about the article with a chocolate!

News of the Moment in 5KP

Hello and thanks to the Parents who joined us last Thursday at Puxi for the Spring Fling. Please thank Mr. Hossack if you see him as it was he who organized this day for us. We were lucky the weather smiled on us and despite some bus issues and the long commute, the children had a wonderful day.

As I reminded the students this morning when we spent the period writing down important dates in our diary, time is short, with less than 7 actual weeks until the end of the school year. Keep your eyes on Parent Talk, my blog, and e mails from school as there is a great deal coming up before our summer vacation can begin. This week we have no school Friday and a math test on Wedndesday. All students should be bringing home Study Links and Student Reference Books to help them revise material and concepts that we have covered during the unit.

Skills covered on the unit ten test include:

*solve two-step pan-balance problems

*write algebraic expressions to represent situations

*represent rate problems as formulas, tables and graphs

*use formulas to find circumference and area of a circle

*distinguish between circumference and area of a circle

*solve one-step pan-balance problems

*interpret mystery line plots and graphs

See this sheet Ms Canar developed to aid you with your revision. The second page of the sheet on Assessment Description gives you a clear indication of what sort of questions will be on the test and how to revise for them using your SRB (Student Reference Book).

N.B. If you cannot access Ms Canar’s sheet, I have copied the information into this post below.

I gave the students two sheets to take home today. One is for a book report (due May 21st) and the other is for the Healthy Meal Project (due May 27th).  This second project is a real favorite for the 5th grade. I have set it well in advance so that they have four weekends between now and when it is due, please go over the sheet with them as soon as you can so that you can make a plan together that won’t have anyone in the family stressed out. The students have been learning about what makes up a healthy and nutritious meal in class time and they will continue to do this over the next couple of weeks, they will also start and finish the puberty unit next week so stay tuned for some possible questions or re-telling of what they have learned.

Reporting on the Classics

This week the class is working on their second book report which will be presented to their classmates over a few lessons of Language Arts starting on Monday the 8th of December. This is not supposed to be an extensive and detailed project. I was really impressed with the effort the students put into their first report two weeks ago and already many students have read one of the books that their classmate recommended to them. Great stuff 5KP.

Due to the interest expressed by the class in studying Classics, that is what we are focusing on now in reading. Thanks to Jackie for sharing 11 of her Classic Stories with us. I am sure many parents recall hours of joy reading such stories as Treasure Island, Moby Dick and Heidi.

This time no storyboard is required for the oral presentation. Instead you are to complete an A4/A3 sized-poster for the class advertising your book to us, this poster will be used as a visual aid during your presentation. Your aim is to ‘sell’ the book to us by giving us an attractive poster and informative speech that highlights the best parts of the book.

When you do your speech, it is along the same lines as what is on the poster, your poster should complement your oral presentation in the same way your storyboard complemented your recent speech.

Questions you should be answering in your speech and/or poster…

Who is the author?

What else have they written?

What year was this book written?

What makes it a classic, why do you think people are still reading it today?

What were the highlights of the book for you?

Pick a sad/funny/happy/scary/exciting/tragic/dangerous scene and read it aloud to the class.

Readers Workshop Oral Presentation

By now you should have all decided on a ‘Just Right’ book to do your class talk on.

You are to present a 4-5 minute speech on Monday the 24th during our LA block.

The speech needs to include the following:

Summary of the book

Details of the main characters

Storyboard of the Plot as a visual aid to your talk with between 8-12 scenes

Rating of the book and why you liked it and who you would recommend it to

Remember the aim of the exercise is to introduce your classmates to new books
