Books to Eat round 1 success

For 6 years, we’ve run Books to Eat as an annual fun event in the Elementary Library, celebrating two of my favourite things; books and food. You can see many of our former entries here, but you will need a VPN to access the youtube clip.

We’ve had all sorts of creations submitted…Grapes with angry faces drawn on for Grapes of Wrath, a huge ice cube for Frozen…the emphasis has been on family involvement, imagination and creativity. However for many, it’s been intimidating seeing some of the INCREDIBLY detailed, majestic, fondant -covered creations made by some people, and I can understand that intimidation, after all, I don’t bake.

But this year I feel like people have really started to listen to me when I’ve said, “it doesn’t HAVE TO BE CAKE” it is ANY edible item, with ANY book. The entries this year were so imaginative, and you could see the hands of pre k, k and 1st graders all over them. I was thrilled. Take a look, and remember next week is 2nd and 3rd grade’s turn, with 4th and 5th grade the week after…however, we aren’t to fussy about things like that; anytime you want to get creative, we aren’t going to stop you! And…don’t forget…

There is so much research to show that eating lots of cake in the library is beneficial for children’s brain development and helps get them into Ivy League Colleges. Nah… just kidding, we do it because it is FUN!

Show me the Sugar

Well, that’s the end of another wildly successful Books To Eat, well done Team 2015… we more than tripled our entries from last year with around 148 all up! Hooray for us.

Thank you to the students for making it happen, and the parents and teachers, some of whom baked multiple times, we appreciate your skills and commitment.

Wow… SO MUCH CAKE

We had a whopping FIFTY entries this week, for our 2nd and 3rd grade Books To Eat Competition. (Oh, and I use that term loosely, every entrant gets a certificate with some award named such as ‘Purplest Frosting Award’, ‘Spottiest Entry Award’ ‘I just want to gobble you up Award’…) It is great fun making up the awards for the kids.

Thank you to all the teachers, parents and especially the students who make this competition so much fun. Please take a minute (or 7) to view the entries from the first two Mondays of Books to Eat 2015 and I look forward to some delicious treats on Monday April 27th from our PreK, K and 1st grade students.

Books to Eat 2015

Hooray, it is almost that time of the year… the time where cake and books come together in the Elementary Library for our Annual Books to Eat competition.

https://www.flickr.com/apps/slideshow/show.swf?v=1811922554

Take a look at some former Books to Eat competitions here at SAS, this is our 3rd year and we’ve had many amazing entries. You can either just go to my blog’s home page and type in Books To Eat in the search button, or check out the images in posts like this, or this.

The ‘competition’ goes something like this…students bring in an edible creation to do with a book; it could be a cake with the cover of the book frosted on to it, a character from the book made into a cake, the setting for a book… you are ONLY limited by your imagination. Many entries are cakes, however, feel free to think outside the box, some of my favorite entries include a block of ice from former SAS teacher, Mrs Toa, representing the book ‘Frozen… a plate of ham for the book ‘I smell like Ham’… and a lonely little pea on a plate to complement Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s book of the same name… What about ‘Green Eggs and Ham’? How about ‘Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs’ by another SAS family who have left us, the Rekate family.

So… start looking at books in a whole new way and get ready to create and bake.

Congratulations Cool Cooking Cake Kids

Thanks so much to the over 60 students involved in presenting the 4th and 5th grade Final Books to Eat Competition yesterday. When I say competition, I mean it very loosely… when asked “who won?” my responses included “you did” “we all did” and “when eating cake, everyone’s a winner”. Some of the certificates I gave out yesterday (every entry gets one) were ‘best brother-sister’ ‘most colorful frosting’ ‘best theme display’ and ‘most original idea’…

Have a look at the amazing entries below, I’m sure you’ll agree, they are inspired, creative and clever. Thank you so much teachers, parents and students for all your support of this annual fun event. See you next year!
