News of the Moment

On January 17th in America people celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. Thanks to Mrs Rekate who has gathered together a wealth of resources for us to explore the famous I have a Dream speech as part of out Poetry Unit; the students all have their own copy of this speech too. Scroll to the bottom of this post for a list of quotes from Martin Luter King; use them as inspiration for your own writing.

The speech is rich in the literary devices we have been studying in our unit such as metaphor, simile, personification and analogy; of course there is also much repetition and we compared and contrasted that with several of President Obama’s speeches such as his ‘Yes we can‘ speech and his Inaugural Speech.

In class today we went through the speech several times, watching the clips on You Tube of the actual speech taking place, here and here, (remember youtube may not work at home) and breaking the speech down as a group so that we could make greater sense of the powerful meaning behind all that King was saying.

In class on Wednesday and Thursday, you will have further opportunities to explore the life of Martin Luther King Jr, and in particular his famous speech. by responding to the prompts on worksheets such as this one.

In other News…
Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. In China, it is known as “Spring Festival,” the literal translation of the Chinese name 春節 (Pinyin: Chūn Jié), owing to the difference between Western and traditional Chinese methods for computing the seasons. It marks the end of the winter season, analogous to the Western carnival. The festival begins on the first day of the first month (Chinese: 正月; pinyin: Zhēng Yuè) in the traditional Chinese calendar and ends withLantern Festival which is on the 15th day. Chinese New Year’s Eve, a day where Chinese families gather for their annual reunion dinner, is known as Chú Xī (除夕) or “Eve of the Passing Year.” Because the Chinese calendar is lunisolar, the Chinese New Year is often referred to as the “Lunar New Year“.
Chinese New Year is the longest and most important festivity in the Chinese calendar. The origin of Chinese New Year is itself centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese new year vary widely. People will pour out their money to buy presents, decoration, material, food, and clothing. It is also the tradition that every family thoroughly cleans the house to sweep away any ill-fortune in hopes to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red colour paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of “good fortune” or “happiness”, “wealth”, and “longevity”. On the Eve of Chinese New Year, supper is a feast with families. Food will include such items as pigs, ducks, chicken and sweet delicacies. The family will end the night with firecrackers. Early the next morning, children will greet their parents by wishing them a healthy and happy new year, and receive money in red paper envelopes. The Chinese New Year tradition is to reconcile, forget all grudges and sincerely wish peace and happiness for everyone.

Famous Martin Luther King Jr. Quotations

Screen shot 2012-01-17 at 12.54.52 PM

Pick one and write a poem inspired by the quotation, then add it to your poetry anthology on your blog.

“Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it.  Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.”

“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

“It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can stop him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important.”

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”

“I’ve seen too much hate to want to hate, myself, and every time I see it, I say to myself, hate is too great a burden to bear.  Somehow we must be able to stand up against our most bitter opponents.”

“Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time.”

“Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”

“A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.”

“At the center of non-violence stands the principle of love.”

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

“He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.”

“I am not interested in power for power’s sake, but I’m interested in power that is moral, that is right and that is good.”

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

Finally…

…I’m back!

It was less than a week ago that our family flew back into Shanghai after an action packed three week trip to Australia. After a whirl-wind week of getting back into the swing of things; I feel a little more ready for a blog post! I do hope you all had a restful/exciting/rejuvenating holiday with your loved ones and that 2011 is a healthy and happy year for your family.

A very warm welcome goes out to Vanessa, our wonderful new student who has settled in beautifully to complete our class this week and take it to the very even number of 20; 10 girls and 10 boys!

Now students, what you’ve been waiting for… News on our Book in a ? Project.

Title: Book in a (you decide depending on the theme of your book and what it is best suited for as well as where your skills lie; you could present in the form of a podcast, keynote, poster, A4 packet or present your work on a cereal box, shoe or flower…)
Due: The first 5 presentations will be on Monday January 24th, which another 5 for each day ’til Thursday and any make-ups needed on the Friday before Chinese New Year vacation. (Due dates are according to your reader’s notebook dates.)
Goal: To share with the class information about a book you have started and finished in 2011 and have some fun as you prepare to share.
Requirements: Your presentation must include approximately 200 words on each of the following areas:

*Characters
*Plot
*Recommendations

We will clarify the above aspects of a book report again during class time but we will not have time to work on the project during class.

Students are expected to present their work to the class during their allotted time and orally tell us a few things about the book; I don’t expect them to read their report out loud, rather just to tell us why they liked the book (or didn’t) and answer any questions people might have about the book as well as go through the slides/poster/report with us.

Students, be creative, have fun and manage your time well this week. You have at least 7 days from now to work on this and I know some of you started work as early as Wednesday. PLAN how you will get your task completed and don’t leave it until the last minute!

In other news…
Before the Chinese New Year Holiday we will complete our Nutrition Unit in Health, our Unit 6 Math test (and consequently our first math journal) and our Essay Unit which I am loving working on with the kids. We have a busy and brief time to do this and I am flexible in that if some things seem beyond us; we will use the three school days after school resumes on February 9th, but the point is, even though there is a short amount of time between Winter Vacation and Chinese New Year; we will be making the most of it.

Parents (AND STUDENTS) please bake for our 5th grade treat day this Thursday Jan 20th!

Speaking of treats, we will be discussing this article in class during our nutrition lessons this week students. It would be very mature of you, very scholarly and very intelligent of you to read it first, see if you understand it, and have an opinion on it or questions about it before coming to class. I will give you until Thursday (which just happens to also be treat day), let’s see how ready for middle school you really are with your independent learning. In accordance with the complexity of the article, I will be rewarding some of the best questions/understandings about the article with a chocolate!

Xin Nian Kuai Le

Have a safe, festive and happy holiday 5KP and families and I look forward to seeing you back here on February 22nd. Thanks for your best wishes and treats and for being such lovely people to work with everyday. Keep up the reading, writing and blogging over the break if it gives you pleasure and helps make those brain cells buzz… Read and Write for the pleasure of it! Try and bring me back a postcard or two for the classroom if you remember.

News of the Moment in 5KP

Welcome to the Second Semester of 5th Grade and welcome to our three new students, Jin Woo, Ada and Sonny. We also have Jocelyn back in the class after a quick change of heart last week and we are delighted she will be spending the rest of the year with us.

Students are working hard in class and at home to finalize their Invention Convention Phase 1 Speech so that it is ready to be presented to the class next Thursday and Friday. Next week is also a busy week in regards to the Chinese New Year as we get ready to celebrate Spring Festival with our Chinese New Year concerts. Parents are invited to attend the concert next Thursday the 22nd of January at 1 pm in the auditorium, be there early as the best seats fill up fast.

So the focus over the next couple of weeks will be on finishing our Unit 6 in Math and being tested before the vacation; probably on Thursday or Friday, getting ready for the Chinese New Year concert and preparing for the Invention Convention Speech. In language arts we are studying what makes a book a Newbery Medal winner and reading some books to do some in-class book reports.

Thanks to Mrs Speece for taking these great photos of last Friday’s reading buddies session where 5KP helped 2JS with their research on China.
