Cardboard Challenge Changes Children

OK, well it’s not that the children are PHYSICALLY changed, or shorter now, or actually changed at all really… but doesn’t that alliteration sound great?

Thank you to Amy Hoosack for all the wonderful, no, BRILLIANT photos taken on Shanghai American School, Pudong Campus’s Elementary Cardboard Challenge.

You can see here what an amazing day the kids had from the smiles on their faces, it really was incredible to see students, teachers and parents having so much fun playing with cardboard… and using their imagination. The only complaint I kept hearing was that they were not allowed to take the materials home with them… and we did tell them why, but it’s hard when you’re 6 to not be able to take things home right.?

Apart from that, there was joy, laughter, teamwork, adaptability, enthusiasm, thinking on your feet, decision making and problem solving displayed EVERYWHERE to be seen.

Marvelous May

In 7 years in Shanghai, I’d never been to Jinshan before, and I think the whole 5th grade found the trip really worthwhile. Thank you to Ms Rekate for organizing the day for us; you can read more about the Village and its history on her blog, and we have details of how you can get there as a family if you’re interested; it would be a great trip to take with visitors to Shanghai.

My 14th and Final Soccer Day as a 5th grade homeroom teacher was AMAZING!
Not only was the weather fantastic, but we WON EVERY GAME, which is a first…the kids were scoring all over the place!

…and now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for…

I’ve finally got around to collecting a few photos from recent (and not so recent) events. Apologies for my pace on this, April was a bit of a whirlwind; we’ve just had news, as I’m sure some of your children have told you, that our little boy, Jeremiah, has been matched with the family that will adopt him and be his parents forever.

Jeremiah has lived with us for most of the school year and looking after a baby has been a big part of our lives since knowing your child, we’ve obviously become very attached to him. We set out to foster a baby who needed help, not knowing how long it would be for, but knowing that we would not adopt the child, no matter what; there was a lot of soul searching along the way, and sticking to our original plan certainly proved difficult as we grew to love Jeremiah more each day. Watching Hannah and Mimi interact with a 3,6,9 and now 12 month old has been amazing, there is so much beauty in watching your little ones become the big ones, and we know they are a little confused about why we can’t ‘keep him’.

We so appreciated the care Mimi received from her foster family until the age of 13 ½ months, and wondered if we would ever have the resolve to do such a thing. Watching them hand her over to us over four years ago, was heart breaking, we felt like the bad guys, taking her from people who obviously loved her, people who had shared their life, their home, and even their bed with her since she was one month old, we couldn’t help but think there was something wrong with this picture. Then as days turned into weeks, and weeks to months, she became our daughter, and completed our family. I expect something similar will happen with Jeremiah and there are many factors that should make the transition easier for him, and for us:
1. He has been with Caucasians for most of his life, so his new family’s physical appearance won’t be as shocking for him as it might have been for Mimi, living in one of the poorest provinces of China, Guizhou.
2. He has spent time with his new family over the last two weeks, been in his new home, and visited with them.
3. Jeremiah knows English and Chinese, he knows some speak one language, and some the other.

Right now, knowing he is with us for 15 more hours… is very very difficult and I’ve told the kids to expect me in sunglasses the next couple of days…

So anyway, back to the photos, enjoy!

Last LAST post of 2011

It was a wonderful celebration today between Pre K and 5th grade students as we got together to share gifts and snacks for the last time in 2011. As always I was proud of the way the 5th graders looked out for their reading buddies, putting their arms around them, helping them choose food and open presents and later on outside. After our snacks were finished with and we were all on a bit of a sugar high, it was time to burn off some energy in the playground so we took off with books in hand. The reading lasted for around ten minutes and then the lure of the swings took over. I’m not sure who had more fun pushing who but there was lots of laughing and running, squealing and shouting as our Reading Buddies made the most of their time together. We will miss Michelle from 5KP and Rebekah from Pre K when we get together again after the Holidays. Keep safe girls and never forget your great mates back in SAS Pudong. Happy Holidays boys and girls, see you in 2012.

Sensational Soccer Success

I don’t know how many goals were scored… I don’t know whether we won or lost… I just know there must have been some tired and sore bodies heading off to be early last night; your kids ran hard! Thank you to the few parents who were able to make it here on the day, and thank you to those who brought in fruit and drinks for us to share, we really appreciated them.

As a classroom teacher, it is such a pleasure to see the kids in a different environment on Soccer Day. Witnessing them at swim meets, art shows, PE class, debates, music eisteddfod’s or dance concerts is equally exciting; you get to see your students in a completely different light. For some students, the whole idea of soccer day is daunting; they just don’t like it. For others, it is an amazing opportunity to show skills off that are normally unseen in an academic environment. I have respect for both of these groups of students however it is the ‘other group’ that I am especially proud of. These are the students that are a bit scared of the ball, but want to get out and have a good time anyway. I am impressed by their courage, their team spirit and the way they go after the ball even though it may result in a kick in the shins. Yesterday we had many of those ‘other kids’ on the team; they supported the stronger soccer players, they encouraged the more careful players to take risks and they embodied what the day is about. Thank You 5KP.

News Just In…

Hi Parents and Students, greetings and salutations from room 209, otherwise known as ‘Hamster Haven’…yes, you heard right, the babies had babies…we are building our own little hamster empire here in 5KP! More Power to the Hamsters!

POWER

*Thank You so much to the six parents who have volunteered for our Walking with Dinosaurs Field Trip, we appreciate your support.

*Your child should wear something ‘aquatic/watery’ tomorrow for our Dive in to Reading day, Wednesday they dress as their favorite book (not movie) character and Thursday is pajama day and report cards go home. NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY

*Most students will have dental and hearing health screening this week, bring back the forms if you have not done so already as they cannot be screened without your written permission.

*If you would like to have a Giving Tree Bag to fill out as a family, please return the form by Wednesday (it went home last Friday) and I will send a bag home with your child. Anyone who is not filling a whole bag will be paired/grouped with others to fill the four bags our class have been given. (See the attached details below, if you end up filling these bags, we will let you know which child has been assigned to you to shop for. We have about ten days to get our bags filled so let’s aim high, next time you’re at Carrefour or Decathlon, pick up a jacket or a pair of shoes, a sweater of some gloves, every item counts towards making Chinese New Year a brighter time for a special child. Just as Christmas is a special holiday for Western children, the Spring Festival is a magical time for Chinese children. They look forward to the gathering of family members, feasting, visiting friends and relatives, and receiving gifts. Let’s make sure they receive something special from an SAS student this year.

Screen shot 2010-11-22 at 12.21.33 PM*My wonderful husband sits on the couch every night with his laptop and lately it has been to complete a presentation titled “Being Cybersmart with your Elementary Child” which he is running tomorrow night at the Green Court Club House (flyer attached). He works hard on these presentations and is well read on the topic so come along if the content is something you are interested in.

*School Photos are coming home today if you ordered them

*This Thursday, artist and author Trevor Lai will have a special session with 5KP during period 6, we were lucky to get this opportunity. Trevor is looking for budding artists to help design a mascot for the new Kerry Parkside mall. If you are interested in advancing your child’s artistic endeavors I suggest you spend some time brainstorming the poster for ideas.MascotDesignPage_exciting3

Have a great week parents, I am thankful for your support and for you entrusting me with the care of your child.

United We Stand…

Thanks for your patience 5KP, here are the photos of the wonderful times we had as S.A.S. celebrated United Nations Day complete with a Ugandan Fund-raising Walk and a visit from a Pakistani Author. As we continue to raise money until this Thursday, keep your eye on our thermometer and see if you can help us reach our goal!

On a more serious note…don’t forget we have our Unit Three Math test tomorrow 5KP, review your shapes, especially triangles and polygons, and angles and you should do very well in this test.

Halloween is coming up as you may have heard and the children are strongly encouraged to wear anything ‘Halloweenish’ to school on Friday, we will have a parade in the morning and I know it will be an exciting day for everyone.

Ready to See some Pictures???

It’s been busy, it’s been exciting, and it has involved a lot of help from the parents of 5KP.
Thank You Parents. Students, please give your mother and father a big, friendly hug from me!
I am so happy you came along today to help us out at Expo, Xie Xie to Flora, Brian, Marilyn, Kristen and Olivia for coming along today. We could not have done it without your amazing assistance, patience and time.

And in other news for those of you STILL with us after all this viewing…

Shanghai American School will close one hour early on Wednesday, September 29th and Thursday, 30th.
The Shanghai American School administration has been informed that the Shanghai Municipal Government will be closing surface streets and some bridges in the downtown areas of Shanghai starting tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.

Our transportation coordinators and the YEAP Transportation company have confirmed that this will severely limit many of our bus routes from both campuses. Based on this information, we will be closing school at 2:00 p.m. both days. There will be no after school activities on either day.

Please contact your building principal or your supervisor if you have any questions.

Please check out the Elementary School Principals Blog for information about our Ugandan Fundraiser that will be coinciding with UNITED NATIONS Day on October 22nd. Our children will be taking part in a walk-a-thon that day, more details to follow. There is also information there regarding a visit to our school by Jason Ohler. Dr. Jason Ohler is a speaker, writer, teacher, researcher, and lifelong digital humanist who is well known for the passion, insight, and humor he brings to his presentations, projects and writings. He will be working with our students in class after the October Break and there is an opportunity for you to meet with him as well if you are interested.

Have a great week, enjoy your October Break and thanks for loaning me your great kids for the year…
