Last LAST post of 2011

It was a wonderful celebration today between Pre K and 5th grade students as we got together to share gifts and snacks for the last time in 2011. As always I was proud of the way the 5th graders looked out for their reading buddies, putting their arms around them, helping them choose food and open presents and later on outside. After our snacks were finished with and we were all on a bit of a sugar high, it was time to burn off some energy in the playground so we took off with books in hand. The reading lasted for around ten minutes and then the lure of the swings took over. I’m not sure who had more fun pushing who but there was lots of laughing and running, squealing and shouting as our Reading Buddies made the most of their time together. We will miss Michelle from 5KP and Rebekah from Pre K when we get together again after the Holidays. Keep safe girls and never forget your great mates back in SAS Pudong. Happy Holidays boys and girls, see you in 2012.

Happy Friday 5KP

The class certainly love science and we had a great double lesson today learning how to separate dry mixtures.
We are underway with our second math unit for the year, Estimation and Computation. We have reviewed our tests for unit one and discussed the errors that were made; the children should have brought home their tests for you to look at by now.

Have a great weekend everybody and thanks so much to the parents who came out last night to our open house, I really enjoyed talking with you. I will leave you with some photos of 5KP with their KLH Reading Buddies. Thanks to Mrs Howitt for allowing us this special time with her class every day 1.

Reading Buddies Science Lesson

Last Friday during reading buddies Mrs Speece asked us if we would like to come along and help 2JS with their science work. They are learning about air so we made some kites and the kids took them outside to see how well they would fly. It was a great collaborative effort where students learned about patience, teamwork and perseverence.

Reading Buddies

Every Friday afternoon for half an hour we get to share experiences with my daughter Hannah’s grade 2 class as we pair up for Reading Buddies. As you can see from these photos we have a lot of fun relaxing and reading with 2JS. The idea is that the 2nd graders choose some books that they would like to either have the 5th grade read to them or that they would like to read aloud to the5th graders. It is a great opportunity for the two grade levels to get together and share some quality time and I appreciate the 2nd graders taking the time to meet with us, thanks Mrs. Speece.

Many students are told for a long time before they get to 5th grade that they are a ‘good reader’. In 5th grade we try to give the students some clearer guidelines about exactly what being a ‘good reader’ looks like. Take a moment to read about ‘What is a critical reader in Grade 5?’
