Let there be salt!

How much fun did you have today 5KP? Was that cool or what?

On the weekend, Simon and I were out at Hotel Indigo’s CHAR restaurant when we were offered not one, not three, but SIX different types of salt to spice up our steak. We chose between Himalayan Pink, Murray River Pink, Cyprus Flake, New Zealand Natural, Bolivian Rose and Fleur de Sel. After taking photos and oohing and aahing we dug in to one of the best steaks we’ve had in a long time, with one of the saltiest array of condiments which was so much fun, considering that the students and I have been learning about salt for the last couple of weeks in science.

Screen shot 2012-03-20 at 8.31.16 PMI set the students the challenge of writing me a report on what they could discover about a salty situation. One of the favorite sites the kids found was saltworks.us where they were amazed with how many salts there were on offer. The class searched and copied and cut and pasted their way around the net and their blogs for the remainder of the afternoon; calling each over to share in their learning. It was a really great lesson and exciting to see so much engagement over something many of us just take for granted as being there, white and well… salty!

Our learning today will be a terrific complement to our lesson tomorrow where we attempt to saturate a salt solution… stay tuned 5KP Scientists!

Science, Publishing Parties and Mooncakes

Wow, what a busy and exciting time it is here at S.A.S. right now. I really hope that soccer day doesn’t get rained out tomorrow 5KP…keep your fingers crossed…

News Just In…
Dear Parents and Students,

We are canceling today’s games but are rescheduling for Friday the 24th (Tomorrow). Please inform all students to bring warmer clothes and perhaps a second set of dry clothes to put on afterward.

We at S.A.S. PD will take this opportunity to better prepare for Friday’s games by setting up additional tents for cover and remarking the fields.

The weather forecast for today calls for 40% chance of rain while tomorrow is only 20% chance.

Please make sure kids are dressed warm enough on Friday.

Thanks again for your understanding and continued support.

Todd Parham (Athletic Director)

Readers, when you have the time check out this great wikipedia site for a fantastic list of young-adult fiction writers.

Scroll down the page (or read it, it is interesting)  til you get to this sub-heading :

Popular contributions to young-adult fiction

and check out some of the authors and book titles.

How many of them do YOU know? How many have you read? Were there any people you think were left off the list? Who and Why?

Write a detailed blog post telling me your thoughts.

Here are some of my favorites from years gone by…now I am getting ready to read some of them to my daughter which is very exciting…

I can’t wait to see the sort of list you come up with and what you think of the titles on the site.

Enjoy the photos of your last science class on Mixtures and Solutions and your wonderful day on the field today.

Happy Friday 5KP

The class certainly love science and we had a great double lesson today learning how to separate dry mixtures.
We are underway with our second math unit for the year, Estimation and Computation. We have reviewed our tests for unit one and discussed the errors that were made; the children should have brought home their tests for you to look at by now.

Have a great weekend everybody and thanks so much to the parents who came out last night to our open house, I really enjoyed talking with you. I will leave you with some photos of 5KP with their KLH Reading Buddies. Thanks to Mrs Howitt for allowing us this special time with her class every day 1.

Science Fun has finally begun…

I know the class were delighted today to begin our science classes with the Mixtures and Solutions unit from our Foss Kits. The class eagerly grouped up in their designated groups to begin experimenting on how to make and separate a solution.

In other news…Remember Monday is a Day 4 so students will have library check out and PE on this day…two things to remember as they pack their bags for school that day…

School Photos will be September 7th, 8th and 9th…more details to follow.

There is a PTSA meeting on Thursday September 3rd at 10 am so see the PTSA blog for details on that. That day will also be treat day where students can buy a special treat with 5rmb at the cafeteria, this is being run by middle school this time but Grade 5 will also be responsible for making treats on the 14th of January and the 4th of May…don’t panic, I will be sure to remind you again before that day.

Here are the details of our upcoming open house Open House Information for Parents

I look forward to seeing all of you there.

Have a great weekend.

Science

5KP are loving their Science unit on Space, thanks Bill Nye for spicing it up a little. The students are naturally curious and interested in Space and everything that comes with it…aliens, space-ships, walking on the moon, rockets, astrology…and they know so much! It is wonderful to see how much they enjoy learning about Space. We have a booklet to work on that was developed by Ms Canar, Ms Yick and Mr Howitt and we work through this booklet at home and at school.

Before Friday students, please cut and paste these three questions into your own blog and answer them in as much detail as you can.

1. How long has there been water on the Earth?

2. What are the three states of water?

3. What makes up everything in the universe?
