Welcome to our Library

The school year has started, and I have met all of our students over the last 10 school days; we are going to have a fantastic year together. The students rush into the library, eager to choose books to take home and read, and are excited to share their treasures with family. We have 27 classes come through the library on a 6 day schedule, most for a 30-minute check-out block; nobody leaves empty-handed.

Once September begins and we have most of the 4,000 books returned from our Summer check-out, students will be allowed to check out between 3-10 books each library cycle, as well as being able to choose from our many digital resources online like Sora, Flipster and our terrific databases.

Librarians…we really do have the best job in the world.

Library Expectations

Teachers, please come with your class for their scheduled library check-out time. Please line your students up outside the front door of the library. Joji, Stella or I will always greet them there, and we’ll lead them into the workspace we’ll be using that day.

Students, please return your library books AS you finish them; do not wait until your library day to return books. Please return your books to your classroom library basket.

Teachers, please allocate a student/group of students in your class to return the library book basket at the START of each school day after most/all of your students have arrived, and had a chance to return their finished books to the library basket. Please make this part of your new morning routine, as it will help us exponentially in our library check out period.

Students, this year we are making a real effort to use shelf markers in the library. You must pick up a shelf marker as soon as my mini-lesson is over, you must keep it in your hand as you walk through the library, using it to mark the place where you choose books from the shelf. You are not allowed to check out your books unless you have your shelf marker in your hand to return to Ms Stella and Ms Joji.

Students, 5 of you are allowed at one time in the loft, you need your shoes, and your voices OFF up there… remember it is for the students who just HAVE to read RIGHT NOW, and FINISH their AMAZING book… or they won’t be able to stand it!

Guidelines for Check Out

EVERY student in Elementary must check out at least ONE non-fiction book each check out period.

Pre K-1st Grade you are to check out up to 5 books at a time. We’d like you to always check out ONE non-fiction book (at least). You are also allowed to check out one magazine or one DVD too, as well as fiction books in the Primary Library.

Grade 2-Grade 5 students, you guys can have UNLIMITED check-out privileges; so use your common sense and make sure you don’t check out more books than you can read. All grades are allowed to keep your books for 14 days, but we love it if you return your books as soon as you’ve finished reading them.

You can check out a maximum of:

1 Graphic Novel

2 DVD’s

3 Books in a Series

Lunch Recess Time Library Visits

Monday and Wednesday-Grades 2 and 4 are allowed to check out in the library during their lunch recess time. If the day is too hot/wet/polluted you are welcome to stay and read. If the day is fine, we’ll send you out to play once you’ve checked out your books.

Tuesday and Thursday-Grades 3 and 5 are allowed to check out in the library during their lunch recess time. If the day is too hot/wet/polluted you are welcome to stay and read. If the day is fine, we’ll send you out to play once you’ve checked out your books.

If there is a book you want to read, and we don’t have it in our library, check destiny to see if we have it somewhere else, like Middle School, or Puxi Campus. If we don’t, let me know and I’ll order it for next year, as well as buying on kindle, audio or ibooks if it is available.

I can’t wait to greet you all in the library, with over 3,000 new books, bringing our collection to nearly 29,000, there is something in our library for everyone!

Check out something brilliant today!

New Beginnings

It was great to meet you today Michelle, Annette, Erika, Josh, Sheung Yee, Bevan, Mia, Taeyun, Yoon Jin, Alex, Jose, Joon Soo, Eric, Aavia, Max and Alex Z and we are looking forward to Claire joining us on Monday when she returns from the UK. The class gelled nicely together with eight returning students and eight new members who will be right at home very shortly thanks to the warm welcome they received from their new classmates.

Parents, tonight you will receive a paper copy of the class schedule with a list of students names on the back, I have also listed this blog address as well as my e mail address so keep that information someplace handy.

Your child’s homework for tonight is minimal, but important. They need to remember to:

*bring their swimsuit, swim cap (optional) and googles (no towel required) see this post for details

*write down the best parent e mail to be contacted on in their agenda, so that they have it here for themselves and for me to make a mailing list to use throughout the year

*leave a comment on this blog telling me how their first day was, including any questions they might have or worries/joys to share about their feelings regarding fifth grade

It was a big day for us here establishing many new routines and your child will no doubt be tired tonight, indeed for the next couple of weeks, but as they develop a routine things will become easier. For now, sleep is the focus so try and get some early nights students, you need your rest!

It has also been a big day for me with my youngest daughter Mimi starting Pre K 4 and my oldest daughter Hannah joining 5th grade. Hannah started here in Pre K 4 (I even wore the same skirt that day as I did today) so it is a little like history repeating itself.

PARENTS PLEASE E MAIL ME AT kimbra.power@saschina.org so that I have a copy of the main e mail address you want me to use to keep in touch with you through e mail and also to alert you when a weekly update on the blog is posted.

Here is the schedule. It may change over the next couple of weeks, but not by a great deal. I gave the students a paper copy of it today to keep at home and feel free to print off this fancy colorful one if you need to. LLB stands for Language Learning Block.

On behalf of the Fifth Grade team and all of us here at the Shanghai American School, we welcome you to the 2010-2011 school year.   We are all keen to begin a year that will be wonderfully memorable for you and your child.

Like the beginning of any school year, the first week of school can sometimes create a variety of emotions within children and their parents.  In order to  ensure a smooth transition for you and your child, we have developed a list of essential ‘bits and pieces’. You can skip the sections you already know about, especially if you are not new to the school. The information in bold is the most pertinent for now.

LUNCH CARDS

Most students had their Eurest cards with them today, loaded up and ready to go. Don’t forget to pay me back if I helped you out today and remember to bring along some money to recharge your card tomorrow. To purchase a healthy, hot lunch from school you must first purchase a Eurest lunch card from the Eurest staff located in the elementary school cafeteria.   Money will be stored on your child’s card and deducted from the balance of the card each time meal items are purchased.  When the balance on the card becomes low, a notification will be sent home asking you to apply money to the card.  Eurest staff will provide a receipt for your records in return.  In the fifth grade, your child is responsible for his/her own lunch card, unlike in previous years.  You are always more than welcome to send a home lunch to school with your child and microwave services and assistance will be provided to warm their lunch when needed.

SNACKS

Some students did not bring along any snack today and in this hot weather, it is important to keep both nutrition and fluids up. Don’t forget your water bottles 5KP. Please provide a healthy snack and drink for snack time.  Healthy snack include sandwiches, vegetable sticks, fruit, crackers and cheese, yogurt or popcorn.  Please refrain from sending candy, potato chips, cookies or cakes and don’t forget our entire school is a nut free zone! Your child needs to bring in their own clearly named water bottle to school as we are discouraging the overuse of the paper cups with our school green initiatives.

BUS RULES

Each bus has a monitor that assists your child.  Appropriate bus rules will be covered in a grade level assembly at the beginning of the year and will be posted on the bus.  A copy of bus rules will be sent home with each S.A.S. family to ensure clarity of bus rules and expectations.  Being respectful and remaining safe while traveling on the bus is an absolute requirement.  The classroom teacher and parents will be promptly notified of any inappropriate behavior.

CLASSROOM MATERIALS

All necessary classroom materials will be provided by the school for classroom usage.   We strongly recommend that a special ‘work area’ be set up in the home that is quiet and supplied with basic school tools to ensure sustained periods of work and/or study.  Once we begin our regular routine, your child will have homework each weeknight and occasionally on weekends when we work on special projects.

HELPING YOUR CHILD ADJUST TO SCHOOL

During the first week of school, we strongly encourage you to talk to your child about school and their new classrooms.  A positive attitude from parents goes a long way to ensure that your child understands that school is a happy place to be.  We would also ask that you check your child’s backpack daily, and please read all school calendars and letters sent home from school.

We hope that you find this information helpful and rest assured more will forthcoming in the days and weeks ahead.  In the meantime, if you have any further questions or concerns, please contact the school or email me at:

kimbra.power@saschina.org

FYI this is the same e mail format you use for any teacher at S.A.S. i.e. firstname.lastname@saschina.org

and here is an announcement regarding swimming try-outs…

Swimming Team try-outs for elementary students in Grade 2, 3, 4 and 5 will be held on Monday, August 23rd and Tuesday, August 24th at 3:15pm sharp.  Swimmers need to attend both days because we will not finish testing out the students in one day.  We will be finished by 4:15pm so students can take the 4:30pm bus home.

All students should be at the Aquatic Center with their bathing suits, caps, goggles and towels ready to compete at 3:15pm.  Parents are more than welcome to watch their children from the Viewing Gallery.  No parents are allowed on the pool deck or in the locker rooms.  As we are trying to make the swimmers responsible competitors, please help us in this. Swimmers trying out must swim all four strokes proficiently.  This is not a learn to swim program but a competitive program.  If your child does make the team, they are expected to train twice a week all year long, attend all Shanghai local meets as well as one international meet.Parents, please make sure that your children know which bus to take home after the tryouts (contact YEAP if you are unsure).

And finally, though swimming is a lifelong skill and for everyone, competitive swimming is not.  Make sure your child is interested in trying out for the team and not something you as a parent want.  They might find it discouraging if they do not make the team.  Talk to them to avoid disappointment.
Parents, please do not contact your classroom teacher for any swim team try out information, contact me personally (George Carpouzis, Aquatics Director):
