5KP Working Hard

Today in class the students completed a variety of math activities as a follow up after their unit one math test and also to get a head start on the unit two math unit that we will be beginning tomorrow. Have test-run-picassa-class-pics-015-small.jpga look at the photos in the slide show below. Some students were working on brainpop.com which is a very popular site with the students that you should have a look at if you get the chance.Overall I was extremely pleased with the results of the math test where the median score for the students was 85%. A few silly errors were made by some students but it was a learning experience for all of the class and I hope you can find a few minutes to look over the test with your child and return it signed to me as soon as possible.Today we were fortunate to have a past student of 5th grade, Ben Wu, come into class and show off his expertise in animating power-point. The class were suitably impressed with what had to show them and I am sure even the brightest ‘tech kids’ in the class learned something new. Thanks very much for your entertaining and informative presentation Ben.test-run-picassa-class-pics-018-small.jpgStudents, for your homework tonight, please make a comment on one of the following topics. It should be at least two paragraphs in length. You may write on more than one topic if you wish but each topic needs a minimum two paragraph response.1. What did you like about Ben’s talk and why? What compliments would you like to pay him?2. If you had to go down and be an expert in a 4th grade classroom what would you teach them?3. How did you do on your math test? Are you happy or disappointed with your results?

  1. Hi Mrs. Power (and all other people reading this). These are my answers to your questions!

I liked Ben’s talk because he showed me so many things on a power point i have never been able to do before. I didn’t no that you could draw a path for your pictures. I am really glad he showed me because I love technology and it makes me happy to learn more about it. Ben, If you’re reading this then you should know that what you did was really awesome!!
If I went down to the fourth grade and had to show them something I could do really well I would probably show them
how to unblock websites with proxies because I have done that many times. There are some websites on my computer (like miniclip) that need proxies to unblock so I would show them all my favorite proxies
I think I did quite good on my math test but I’m kind of disappointed that I would have gotten 100% if I read the instructions right. On the first question it said to make 3 arrays, but I only made 1. But 92% is definitely good!

  2. 1.Ben’s powerpoint was very interesting! I like when he showed us how to do the custom pathway. I liked it because he made a bunch of squiggly lines that made the pictures and words go crazy (Even though you (Mrs.Power) don’t like it)!
Some compliments I have to give him are that he must be very organized if he kept that powerpoint for more than a year. I also have to say that he did a good job explaining everything he had to talk about.

2.If I had to teach something to a classroom filled with 4th graders I would probably teach them about horse and ponies and the different breeds of hoses and ponies. I think that would be a good thing for me to talk about because I know a lot about horses and ponies. I have also been riding horses and ponies for more than 5 years now!

3.I did not do as well as I thought I would on my math test. I thought I might do very well but I didn’t do as well as my mom and dad thought I would also. I got a 77% which is about a C or a B I think. The reason I got a 77 was because I made at least 3 silly mistakes.
I am a little bit disappointed. But I know I shouldn’t be because it is very early in the year.
    Sincerly,
    Willow

  3. I loved Ben’s talk, though he never showed us how to draw on Powerpoint. Hopefully I can “spice up” that presentation now…. *winks and moves mouse towards custom animation* BEN, you are AWESOME!!!

I am very happy with my math grades, though my dad doesn’t think I deserved those last 4 points. Oh well!

P.S. OH DANG! I forgot my Family Letter….

  4. I don’t think my last talk was long enough, so I will go deeper. (If you’re reading this, don’t accept the last one)

    1. Excellent presentation, where did you learn all this? I hope my Powerpoint will look better now, but no guarantees that I won’t do everything right…. *reaches towards whip animation*
    GO BEN!

    2. Ahh… the 4th grade. That brings back memories; sitting around, having parties, eating ice cream. I would probably show them everything there is to know about computers, I know most of their functions.

    3. What can I say? 100%!!!!! YEAH!!!!! I forgot my Family Letter though. Oh yeah, and thanks for the tip-off!

  5. Hi Mrs.Power, and my classmates,

I had a great time having Ben showing us all about PowerPoint. It was really cool! I never knew that you could choose different looking textures for a background. I’ll try doing that sometime at home or at school. It was nice that Ben listened to us and let us take turns trying out the animations.
If I had to teach the fourth grade about something, I’d tell them about animals. I LOVE animals. It would be great if I could bring in my hamsters for them, but they would get nervous and start biting. It would be fun if I could do that.
I’m very glad I got a good grade on my first math unit test. It was easy for my mom to sign! Math is my favorite subject! (Along with Art and Music.)

  6. Hi Michael,
Don’t worry, I forgot it too. My parents don’t read the Family Letter. They just put it in a pile with my other load of school stuff.

  7. I liked Ben’s power point because he showed us a lot of cool things that we can use when we make power points.I also like how he let some of us try some things.

I think after he taught us these things I think I can make a cooler power point then I could before.

I also think that Ben is an awesome public speaker.

I am sort of disappointed about my math test because I made two really silly mistakes.

I hope on my next test that I will do a lot better.

P.S. I forgot my family letter too. Luckily my parents don’t read it.

  9. If I were to go down to the fourth graders I would choose to do a deatailed organized essay with them. I would do this because during the fourth grade I really enjoied writing an essay. I found that it sounded good if you put alot of personal conections and made it organized. I think it would be fun to help kids with writing, especially for me sence I LOVE to write and it is one of my strengths. Another reasoon I would like to teach writing in 4TD, my old class is because Mr. Denton was a strong writing teacher. He look it very seriosly so it would be cool to teach his class. If anyone asked me to give a essay lesson, I would probably answer yes, it would be cool.

I agree with jackie because she said Ben taught us alot of cool things that we can try out on Power Point and use for our self she also said that he is a good public speeker and I think that is true he just acted like he was talking to his best friend. I don’t know if I good do that. And one more thing I have in commin with Jackie is that I forgot my parent letter but my mom also never reads the parent letter, we just recycle it anyway so there is no point.

  11. Dear Mrs.Power,

    1. I think that Ben’s talk was cool and I also learned some stuff. I’m glad that I was one of the people who got to do something on the power point. One of the comments I would like to give/leave is that I thought that some of the things that he edid were cool like i said before.

    2. I think I would teach them how to do some moves. I would choose Mr.Denton. One of the resons why I would pick that is because he was my teacher last year. Another reason why is because he was a high school(?) soccer coach.

    3. I got 71% in the math test and I was disipoited in my self because I am good in math and it’s a low score for me. another reson why is because I forgot to study because I had to play soccer 2 times that weekend.

  12. 1. I like bens talk because it let me learn more things about powerpoint and powerpoint skills will be useful during the year because we will do alot of powerpoints. I also like bens talk because he showed us alot of things that we can make our powerpoint better and more colourful. WOW Ben you are very good at powerpoint I wish some day I can be that good.

    2. I would take them downstairs and teach them fun games or I would teach them about recycling. I would choose fun games but if that does not work out I would teach them how important recycling is.

    3. I had 88%.I think I did ok but I could do better. Two of the mistakes where related so if you get one wrong you would probably get the other one wrong to. I had silly mistakes I could have noticed if I went over my work to check it. I just did it a little fast and forgot to notice some instructins.

2.I would show them how to use the internet correctly and how to use a powerpoint correctly and some fun sites to go to

3.Ithink Idid kind of lousy on my test because Igot lower then 80 and I am kind of happy because I studied for it like I am suppose to but I am kind of down because of the math test

  14. 1. I really liked Bens talk. It was really cool!!! It brought all my memories back to life on doing tricks on the computer!
I even learned how to scribble and other things like that!

    2. If I could teach the 4th graders about something, I would teach them about power point tricks! Ben has talked to us about power point so well that I felt I really wanted to teach the 4th graders about tech!

3.I was a little disapointed that I got 92% instead of 100%. I could of gotten 100! Oh well, can’t change the pass when you have already did it unless you had a time machine. At least it’s okay .

2/If I had to teach 4th grade drawing…It wuld probably art.Because I like art ALOT and I had taught my younger cousin how to draw,so I think i might be able to handle it.
I think that teaching art wasn’t actually as hard as I thought it was.

3/I was very dissapointed in my math test…so was my mom.
There were lots of clumsy errors, if I had read every question twice or atleast more carefully I might have gotten a much better grade.
But I know I will do better in the next test!:(

Don’t feel too hard on yourselves about the math, like many of you have said, there were some silly errors and it is only the first test of the year. You CAN and you WILL do better! You have great potential in math, I believe you are the best all ’round math students I have taught in 4 years, don’t give up!
Note to the whole class…a lot is two words…A LOT like…
A FEW…A DOZEN…A COUPLE… don’t let me see ALOT in your writing EVER again!
    Good Luck!

  19. Hello guys, it’s me. I read all your posts and I thank you guys for all the compliments. I know that though some of you feel bad about the math test, don’t give up right now and sulk all day. Even if you get a 60%(which is almost impossible to get) on your math test, don’t give up. Oh yeah, a quote from Thomas Jefferson, a guy who wore a wig and sat at a desk 48 hours trying to finish the Declaration of Independence. “I find the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.” So remember that! Mrs. Power is right…. have you ever seen famous authors like Geronimo Stilton and Mary Pope Osbourne (the guys who wrote the Geronimo Stilton series and the Magic Tree House series) use the word alot? Anyway, it seems that everyone wants to teach something different. Keep up the good work! My blog is at blogs.saschina.org/ben01pd2015. Enjoy the videos!

  20. Hi, im sorry mine is late, yesterday i couldnt get access to a computor, anyway here are my answers: Bens talk was awesome, i learned a handfull of new things, he was really fun with us, and because of him being still three quarters kid he knew what kids liked to see on a computor, i especially loved drawing the line for the picture to go with, i made one random show about my cats on my computor with everything he taught us, i pretty sure Mrs.Power wouldnt like it….If i went back to my fourth grade classroom, something related to school..It would be creative essays, in fourth grade my teacher said it was me strongest point, everyday, actually every tuesday and fryday i would sit in my seat staring impaitiently at the clock for the time to finally come,i loved it, and im pretty sure that if i could show them why and how much i liked it they would like it too. I dont know what i think about my test i didnt get a perfect score but on the other hand i couldnt have studyd much more than i did last weekend.i know that in time i will imrove because i am really fidgety after breaks, and during test…..anyway those are my answers.

He did alot of things that I didn’t even know how to do like the scribbling and how to animate the pictures.Mrs.Power,I think on his comment for the power point that you would make is to not put in to much fancy stuff but if I did a comment for him I would say awsome even though I have to wait 20 min. for 1 slide.
    2. My memorys from 4th grade, realy good times. I would teach them about different things like animals, science…and many other stuff. Also after every suject we learn we go on a feild trip like the zoo and the science mueseum and other places so it will be great!
3.I got 81% but at first I was going to got a lower score and also my parents thought it was great too!

    1. I liked Ben’s talk because it showed me many things on power point I didn’t know how to do before – like drawing paths for example, I never knew you could do that. Oh, Ben if you’re reading this then I just want you to know you’re really cool.
    2. If had to go down to the fourth grade I would show them how to do backgrounds. Next I l would show them how to animate. I would save the best for last – I would show them how to draw paths.
    3. On my math test I feel very disappointed that I got a low score. Next time I will pay more attention and read the instructions better.

  23. I found out that a bunnies cage should be cleaned with white vinegar is the best thing that you can use to clean a cage. The website says that if there is a biuld up of urine in the cage scrubing it with white vianger with git rid of it.

A healthy rabbit diet will incorporate daily portions of hay, vegetables, pellets and fresh water with the occasional treat. Hay is, by far, the most important element in a healthy bunny diet. It helps keep the bunny鈥檚 digestive system operating regularly, helping to prevent gastro-intestinal upsets. It also provides a constant source of nutrients which will keep the bunny healthy while minimizing the risk of obesity.

(I found this on a internet site )

Sit in a comfortable chair and hold the bunny in your lap for a few minutes. When bunny is calm, gently cradle him/her with belly up and head, chest and back curled against your abdomen, and hind feet facing away from you. Be sure to firmly support the back, and don’t allow the bunny to kick. A rabbit’s hind legs and back muscles are so powerful and his skeleton so light (rabbits are built for quick getaway!) that one kick in a bad position can actually result in a spinal fracture!

The prepuce is the fuzzy protuberance between the hind legs. Gently press down on the anterior part of it (the side facing you), and the pink tissue inside will emerge. In a young female, the tissue will appear somewhat conical, with a slit running from the tip, backwards towards the tail. In an older female, the tissue may be more “fleshy”, but the slit is still generally from tip towards the back.

If the rabbit is a young male, the pink tissue will appear more like a cylinder with a small hole in the center. If he’s starting to mature, the tip of the penis may protrude. A neutered male’s penis will usually not be large enough to protrude, though this is not always the case. A mature, unneutered male will have large, obvious testicles (more than one inexperienced bunny parent has mistaken these for “tumors” on their “female” rabbit, prompting Kevin to christen them “Bilateral Perianal Testosteromas”) on either side of the prepuce. They are usually pinkish with rather obvious veins, but may be grey. They are somewhat “sausage shaped” and start just in front of the prepuce and curve backwards towards the tail. If the bunny is frightened, he may retract the testicles, making them hard to see.

Sorry mrs. Power I havn’t found any particularly good websites on bunnies yet but I will keep looking.
