The rabbits have entered the building!!!

Well 5KP, little did I know, when I entered room 209 this morning, that when I left it this afternoon I would be leaving two little creatures behind. But a mysterious announcement this morning alerted me to the fact that rabbits had entered the building and I was fortunate enough to be able to take them to my room and we are now looking after them here indefinitely.

rabbits-002-small.jpg

We have named our bunnies ‘Salt’ and ‘Pepper’ for now and a team of “experts” decided today that they are two females…or two males!!! Here’s hoping they are right on at least one of those counts as the other alternative is not a good one.

For homework tonight students can you do a bit of research for me on the rabbits.

What do they like to eat? How often should they be fed? How big will they grow? How can I tell which gender they are? If they breed, how long til we see baby rabbits? How often should we clean their cage? What is going to happen if I let them out??? Can you tell me any good websites out there that we should look at as a class?

Parents, I apologize in advance for the onslaught of “mum, dad, can we pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaassssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeee have a rabbit, please, please, please!!!

I know I am going to get the same question at home and I can see why after spending the day with these little cuties. I had my work cut out for me teaching this morning’s math class on estimation with Pepper doing a little dance in the cage beside me!

  1. 1. Bunnies like to eat grass, apples (without core and seeds), basil, alfalfa, radish, clover, beet greens, broccoli (leaves and stems), brussel sprouts, carrots (treat only), celery, chicory, cilantro, dandelions, dill, tops of dutch carrots, endive, parsley, pea pods, cos lettuce, spinach, watercress, wheatgrass, unlimited amounts of hay. Letting your rabbit in your backyard to eat grass is a good idea, but make sure it doesn’t escape!
    2. They should be fed at least once or twice a day. Two times tops.
    3. I think it depends on the breed. They can be up to 3-4 pounds to 9-15 pounds.
    4. You can tell their gender by how they look. A male’s head and body will be more blocky compared to a female’s of the same breed.
    5. Rabbits can breed up to 5 to 6 times a year. There usually are seven babies in a litter.
6.You’ll need to clean its cage about every second or third day.
    7. I found some great websites!
    Try: http://www.fuzzy-rabbit.com/hfaq.htm

  2. Hey, I gotta do my Chinese homework, but just a quick post.

Rabbits will eat pretty much anything with juice inside it. If you don’t believe me, go to Malone’s in Thumb Square Plaza and give the rabbit outside the fruit/ veggie of your choice. He will eat it!

1-2 times a day should be enough. Water should be available at all times.

No idea, but not over 6 pounds. That’s how much my cat weighed last time we checked, which was 3rd Grade.

Um… look for the _____? (5 letter word for bladder)

I’m not sure, I think they have 4-6 litters in their life? That equals 6 years, which is a pretty long life for a rabbit.

Oooh, the droppings. I advise just dumping them in the grass or something, as they’re biodegradable and small.

  3. Wow,Tiffany, you found a lot of foods that bunnies like, but I found one you didn’t. They also like to eat cucumber and they are herbivores. Another thing I found they like to eat(you might not want to try this, it was just a story I found) is paper!! This is the story:

I have a question for you. I just got a floppy ear bunny about 3 or 4 months ago. She is a great bunny almost 100 percent litter trained. At first she just stuck to her hay and pellets but now she seems to like other things to chew on. We give her a little bit of hay 2 or 3 times a day followed by plain pellets with no seeds because i read that they are bad for them. She is starting to show an interest in paper. I gave her a phone book to rip up because i read that they like that but, she is starting to eat the paper so i try to give her blank paper now because of the ink.

Hahahaha I wonder if salt or pepper would like paper…

I thought you might want to read that so I pasted it on here.

Well, that’s all the info I could find that Tiffany couldn’t…

  4. i found a cool website. the house rabbit society has everything we need to know about caring for rabbits…general care, diet, litter training, mental health (they need to play), grooming, and their environment. i printed some stuff off and will bring it in tomorrow.

  5. I couldn’t find so much information,but here’s what I found:
    1. Rabbits need to be feed twice a day(morning and evening)
    2. Avoid feeding the rabbits head lettuce, white potatoes,(limit sweet potatoes), green beans, anything that grows from a bulb.
    3. Rabbits are clean animals. They normally go to the bathroom in the same spot each time.(I had a rabbit i America)
That’s all the information I could find!

  6. 1. What do they like to eat?
They like to eat green vegetables, fruit or pet store rabbit food .

    2. How often should they be fed?
They should be fed about 2 times a day and if you are changing their diet change it slowly otherwise they will die.

    3. How big will they grow?
I think the rabbit will be about two kilos.

    4. How can I tell which gender they are?
You can tell what gender a rabbit is as young as a few weeks old if you know what to look for. However it is hard to tell. Here is a website with photos that will explain it.
    http://www.debmark.com/rabbits/sexing.htm

    5. If they breed, how long til we see baby rabbits?
It take 31 days from the time they breed to the time they have the litter. Female rabbits are pregnant for a period of 1 (one) month (generally 28-32 days).

    6. How often should we clean their cage?
You should clean the cage every one or two days. The bedding must always be changed every time you are cleaning the cage.

    7. What is going to happen if I let them out?
I think if you let them out in your backyard they would just nibble on the grass but don’t lose it or let a cat eat it!!

    8. Good websites: http://www.ClikerBunny.com and the one in question 4.

  7. Rabbits like to eat fruits, vegetables, grain, hay and pellets. Make sure that you don’t feed them head lettuce, white potatoes, limited sweet potatoes, green beans, anything that grows from a bulb, rhubarb leaves, grass or dandelions or anything that is sprayed with spray for pests. You should feed a rabbit 1-2 times a day on average. Pet rabbits could do these things if you let them out of their cage so be careful. They could bite through electrical wires, drown in your toilet and ruin your carpet by trying to dig a β€œhole”. If you don’t clean their cage a build up of ammonia from urine can cause respiratory problems and weepy eyes. You would want to clean it once a week per week but at least once. To see if it’s a male or female you have to cradle the rabbit back into your arms or on to your lap, MAKE sure you hold it tight and be careful of its back. Put your index and your middle finger either side of the rabbits middles, and push slightly. If a tube comes out it’s a male and with a slit it’s a female. The gestational period is 28 days. It take 31 days from the time they breed to the time they have the litter. They weight about 2-6 pounds.

  11. 1/What do they like to eat?
Rabbit Pellets are their main rabbit food

Rabbits eat fruits, grains, and vegetables.

Fruits are also easily overfed, causing imbalances in the digestive system. One strawberry, two or three raisins, a slice of apple, or a small chunk of banana is enough fruit for one day for an adult pet rabbit.

Rabbits need a very high fiber diet to maintain their health.

Your rabbit needs a fresh, clean supply of water at all times. You can use either a crock or a water bottle. There are advantages to each. Crocks are easy to fill and easy to clean. But they can be stepped in or turned over.

Avoid head lettuce, white potatoes, (limit sweet potatoes), green beans, anything that grows from a bulb.

2/How often should they be fed?
Rabbits need to be fed twice a day (in the morning and in the evening).
    How big will they grow?
All rabbits have different sizes that depends on what they eat, some can be as big as spaniels and others might be the size of a guinea pig.
How can I tell which gender they are?
You have to craddle the rabbit back into your arms or on to your lap, MAKE sure you hold it tight and be carful of its back. Put your index and your middle finger either side of the rabbits middles, And push slightly. If a long tube pops out its a male and with a big slit its a female.

3/If they breed, how long till we see baby rabbits?
    (1. Six months of age is typical for most small to medium breeds and eight to twelve months with large breeds and twelve to eightenn months for giant breeds. You want to let the animal put all it’s physical energy into it’s own growth before taxing it with reproduction. Many breeders will start dwarf breeds as early as four months but they are experienced enough to know from the animal’s development if it is practical.)

4/How often should we clean their cage?
You should clean the cage weekly.

If you have an indoor cage with a tray, you may want to change the tray twice per week, but at least once.

You should remove any uneaten fresh foods (greens, veggies etc.) from the cage daily (ideally morning and night).

Dirt, droppings, and urine from rabbits can contain germs that will make them sick… and a dirty cage will attract flies.
Flies can lay eggs in solid waste and will cause the pet some problems.

5/What is going to happen if I let them out???

He/she might run away, so it is better not to let him/her out for a long time.

  18. The bunny might run away because they still have a wild heart, so if the bunnies run away it is not your falt. When a bunny pets your hand with its nose it is saying hello!! or pet me.A bottle of freash water should hang from the cage every day. That means you have to change the water every day. The cage should be some where you can’t hear loud noises because bunnies have super sensitve ears, so you havde to be very quiet. In the cage there should be a litter box that needs to be cleaned every day.there has to be hay or something to chew on that is safe.rabbits like to spend a lot of time out side so let it be soe where you can’t let it acape. Keep them away from cats and dogs and there other preaditors.Baby rabbit are really active depending what they are. Most people like small ones because they will last longer. If the rabbit is treated bad it will treat you the same way. If you treat it niceley it will treat you like the way it is being treated. They enjoy diging, craling under things, hopping, and chewing.a closed cardboard box will do the trick. With some rabbit sized holes cut into it. Also hard baby plastic toys are good. They caps of landry detergent bottles (well rinsed)any plastic balls that can be thron or rolled. In the afternoon is when your bunnies should sleep. So don’t disturbe it then.Only in the moring and night time is it ok.A well cared for pet can live for 12 years. Pregnancy lasts for about 31 days. A bunny can run faster than a person, cat, or white tailled deer. so if it runs away your best chance is to corner it.

I agree with Michael that bunnies wont bolt out of the cage if the door is open unless it is a curiousone. When Mrs Power took out one of the bunnie’s, the other one didn’t leap out the door,it stayed in.
