New Beginnings

It was great to meet you today Michelle, Annette, Erika, Josh, Sheung Yee, Bevan, Mia, Taeyun, Yoon Jin, Alex, Jose, Joon Soo, Eric, Aavia, Max and Alex Z and we are looking forward to Claire joining us on Monday when she returns from the UK. The class gelled nicely together with eight returning students and eight new members who will be right at home very shortly thanks to the warm welcome they received from their new classmates.

Parents, tonight you will receive a paper copy of the class schedule with a list of students names on the back, I have also listed this blog address as well as my e mail address so keep that information someplace handy.

Your child’s homework for tonight is minimal, but important. They need to remember to:

*bring their swimsuit, swim cap (optional) and googles (no towel required) see this post for details

*write down the best parent e mail to be contacted on in their agenda, so that they have it here for themselves and for me to make a mailing list to use throughout the year

*leave a comment on this blog telling me how their first day was, including any questions they might have or worries/joys to share about their feelings regarding fifth grade

It was a big day for us here establishing many new routines and your child will no doubt be tired tonight, indeed for the next couple of weeks, but as they develop a routine things will become easier. For now, sleep is the focus so try and get some early nights students, you need your rest!

It has also been a big day for me with my youngest daughter Mimi starting Pre K 4 and my oldest daughter Hannah joining 5th grade. Hannah started here in Pre K 4 (I even wore the same skirt that day as I did today) so it is a little like history repeating itself.

  2. I liked today becsuse it was very enthusiastic and gave me a chance to make a few new friends. I was just so nerveous. Howerver now I feel like I am part of the whole. I am excitied, especially to learn math. In the test I had no idea about inch, feet and yard. I think you will teach me good and I will try and be a hardworking student. Some disappointment is that the indoor recess was boring. I hope tomorrow won’t rain.

  3. Hello, Ms. Power,

    I’m excited about swimming tomorrow.

Today I was shy and a little nervous because it’s the first day back to school.

I want to know who will be my Chinese teacher. Maybe I will find that out this week.

When do we get to use the MacBooks and when can we bring them home?

Do I need to buy a clarinet? I want to practice it at home.

    See you in class!

    Cheers,

    Annette

PS Do we have any fun activities on Fridays or? . . .

  4. Hi Kimbra,

My daughter Michelle Bai started her first day at SAS and seemed integrating well. She even told me that she has started making friends in the class. I am relieved as I was a bit worried about her ability to adjust in a new environment.

I saw your blog on SAS swimming team. Michelle is thrilled to have the opportunity to join. So she is in.

    Thanks much for help.

  5. Hi Mrs. Power.

Greetings from Dover, Massachusetts and welcome back to school! It was so good to hear from you. I hope your summer break was fun–it does go by quickly, doesn’t it?

It sounds like you’re off to a great start! As of today I have 17 students in my class, although it may change by 1 or 2 students by the time we begin on the 31st. I’m looking forward to making the blogging connection with your class again.

I was wondering if there is a particular day that your students will have blogging time at school. We haven’t had a set time in the past, and my students varied in the amount of time they blogged independently. I was thinking of trying to establish a scheduled time for my class to blog this year in an effort to help keep all of our kids better connected. Was wondering what you think?

I look forward to getting to know your class! Enjoy the start to your year!
    Take care.

my first day in class was fun. the best time at school today was when you pased out the blueberrys because i love blueberrys. i have no Questions about 5th grade but this is some facts about me is that I am from Canada and China. My dad is from china and my mom is from Canada and my brother is from Hong Kong. My brother’s name is Taite. My birthday is 28/10/00. Some of my hobbies are rip sticking, building Lego and making stop motions with my brother on the weekends. i don’t like to play piano or learning chines because i get bored of it after awhile. On the weekends I play hockey. I like to cook but I’m not as good as good as my brother. My favorite color is black. I live on the 55th floor and I have a good view of the bund. Form my view you can see the purl tower, the Jing Mao tower and the Shanghai world fictional center.
