ORDER FORM CHINA 2016Greenberg Order Form

If you are interested in the Civil Rights presentation offered to grades 4th-12th please join the High School division in the PAC on Tuesday at 9.25 am. David’s father was the lawyer for Martin Luther King and this presentation is excellent. If you would like to join in on any of his poetry presentations, you are also always welcome, check the schedule for a time that suits you and talk to your child’s classroom teacher.

We need Volunteers

Parents, please contact me via e mail kimbra.power@saschina.org if you think you can spare a few hours before October Break to volunteer in the Library. We always need volunteers and you will have the opportunity to discover many great resources our library offers, not just for your child, but also for you.

Cardboard Challenge

We are participating in the Global Cardboard Challenge on Thursday October 13th and we need your help. This week, please hold on to as many small cardboard items as you can and send them in with your child starting September 26th. We run a friendly competition between the 22 elementary classes to see who can bring in the most small cardboard items; think toilet rolls and tubes, granola and cereal boxes, tissue and cosmetic boxes etc. There will also be the opportunity to send in larger items after the October Break and talk to your homeroom teacher if you think you’d like to volunteer your time on the 13th; it is a LOT of fun. Search cardboard challenge into the search area above to see some of our past events.

If so, hand in all of your library books, pay any fines for lost books or electronics, and the first GRADE-LEVEL that is in the clear, (we check every day at 10 am sharp) will win an ice cream for every student… maybe even the teachers too!

You can check your library account to see what is checked out to you:

Oh, and Parents, if you’re reading… we’d still love you to volunteer if you’re in the library anytime next week… even 20 minutes would help us out.

Parent Volunteers Desperately Needed
Parents, we REALLY need your help. We are doing a full inventory of almost 30,000 items in the ES Library in the next two weeks,
as well as teaching classes, checking out books, and checking in ALL the items checked out this year.
If you are on campus to:
*see your child perform
*enjoy a farewell party
*organize a sporting event
*attend a music event
*pick up your child
*drop off your child
*or ANYTHING at all… and can spare a couple of hours in the library we would be eternally grateful…
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY… just come in and we’ll put you to work within minutes.

Thank you in anticipation

Enjoy these last few busy, often emotional, few weeks and we hope to see you at SAS next year. If you are leaving us, please drop by the library to say good-bye, you will not be forgotten and will certainly be missed by many.

Your presence is requested…

…SO many times over the next month, you may want to come and camp out in the tent I’ve put up in our classroom!
However, there are a couple of events I’d really like you to attend if possible.
May 22nd is our soccer day, the last one for elementary, the 6th and final soccer day for some of those kids that have been here
since 3rd grade. Games kick off around 10 and whether or not you attend is up to you and your child; you can come for a little
while too, it doesn’t have to be the whole day. More details to follow on Soccer Day.
That morning, from 8.15, we are having our final writer’s celebration for our Memoir Unit which the kids have been working on for
the last two weeks now. I would LOVE for you to attend that session in our classroom.
The Friday before that, May 18th is our Field Trip to Jinshan Peasant Painting Village and I am short of volunteers, meaning, I have
not heard from anyone, so please e mail and let me know if you can chaperone 5KP with me that day, I am excited about this trip.

A big thank you to Annette for recommending the book Letters from Rifka by Karen Hesse to me last Thursday. I finished the book this morning Annette, I couldn’t put it down. Although this book is now twenty years old and I had heard of it over the years, it took a student telling me enthusiastically how much they enjoyed it, for me to finally pick it up and read it. Thanks also to Aavia and Erika who told me about the Jean Craighead George book, My Side of the Mountain. I read it earlier last week and thoroughly enjoyed the adventures of Sam Gribley as he set off alone into the wilderness and look forward to reading the next two books in the series.

So Parents…What exactly do you do???

Hi Parents,

Today at our 5th Grade Planning Retreat, we were discussing what sort of field trips we could plan for your children this year, and you came up in the conversation. In the past, we have had field trips to GM as one of our 5th grade parents worked there; it was a real blast for the kids to see how different parts of the factory and offices worked and the visit complimented our Science units on Inventions, and on Models and Designs beautifully.

So… where do YOU work? How do you spend your days? Is there any way you could allow our students a peak into your busy world? We know this won’t be an option for all parents, but if you believe that your occupation might have something to offer our students, whether it be us coming to you for a fully fledged field trip, or you would be able to come in and share your story with us like Annette’s Dad Wayne will be doing during our Inventors Unit… then please, PLEASE, drop us a line so WE can learn from YOU!

In other news, we had a great time this week in class, so many fun things are going on right now. We finished our fantastic Read-A-Loud, The Best Bad Luck I Ever Had by Kristin Levine which taught us many things about friendships and standing up for what you believe. We continued in our social issues book clubs, some groups even moving onto their second novel; engaging in rich and thought provoking discussions and learning valuable lessons along the way, our second personal narrative was read, reviewed, revived and re-written on its way to being published next Monday and we divided our time nicely as we moved through our 4th unit in math. If you have not checked out the division movies in the previous post, please do so now, (although remember they won’t work at home without a VPN). I am sure these movies will be of help to you as we prepare for our test next Thursday. So will this list of what will be on the Unit 4 Test:

· Find multiples and use them to rename numbers
· Know and use multiplication facts
· Divide using a friendly numbers strategy with the partial-quotients algorithm
· Divide using “at least…not more than” strategy  with the partial quotients strategy
· Make magnitude estimates with decimals
· Measure and draw line segments to the nearest half inch
· Estimate using a map scale
· Write an open number sentence for number stories
· Determine what to do with a remainder

There were more exciting things going on this week too; did I mention our Brownie ‘Throwdown’ Bobby Flay Style? Happy Birthday to Pepo and Erika, we LOVED both of your brownies…
